Our Lecturers
Is a Tax Principal with MacIntyre Hudson LLP and is one of their tax lecturers. After service in the Royal Navy, Bob qualified as a chartered accountant with Coopers and Lybrand where he specialised in corporate taxes. On moving to MacIntyre Hudson, he broadened his scope to deal with all types of taxation. He has a wide range of tax knowledge and lectures on a range of subjects including the tax implications of buying and selling companies, capital tax planning, trusts and share valuation work. He is also specialist in a number of industries or niches such as solicitors, farmers and the medical profession and on the professional indemnity insurance aspects of tax work. |
Brian has over 30 years experience in employment tax and National Insurance Contributions including dealing with Pay As You Earn investigations. He has been involved in the negotiation of settlements on clients' behalf at the highest level. He has specific knowledge of designing and implementing systems and procedures to ensure employment tax compliance and has prepared and designed expense manuals and deals with large scale termination / redundancy issues on behalf of a wide range of clients. Brian lectures regularly on a range of PAYE issues and is a regular contributor of articles to newspapers and trade magazines. |
Caroline trained as a Chartered Accountant in London with Coopers & Lybrand. In 1989 she moved from her role as Head of their Exam Support Group to lecture Tax and Financial Reporting at BPP. While employed by BPP she taught at all levels of the ICAEW, CIMA, ACCA exams on both fulltime and link courses and developed BPP's approach to the ICAEW's first multidisciplinary case study exam. Caroline excels at making complex areas seem simple both in the classroom and on paper. She is able to focus student attention on what they really need to succeed in their exams; namely core technical knowledge and sound exam technique. In 1997 she transferred to become Managing Director of BPP Taxation Courses responsible for all ATT and CTA courses; this was a role that she combined with Managing Director of BPP Professional Development where she was responsible for the smooth running of their CPE courses around the country. In 2002, with the back office established and her children starting school, Caroline wanted more flexible employment and so returned to tax training but this time on a freelance basis. She now does a variety of work for a number of organisations and increasingly finds that her time is spent working on on-line training solutions both pre and post qualification. |
Chris has specialised in tax investigation work for the last 30 years. He started his career in the Inland Revenue and was a district inspector in East London region before joining Moores Rowland in 1985. He was a partner in their London office heading their national tax investigation group until he joined Baker Tilly in1998. There he was the partner responsible for tax investigations in London and the South East until he left in the Spring of 2003 to set up his own consultancy. Chris specialises in assisting individuals and omb's who are under investigation, particularly where Special Compliance Office are involved. He is a frequent presenter and writer on tax investigations. |
Chris is Head of Tolley Tax Training and has lectured to ATT and CTA students since 1995. During this time he has gained an excellent reputation for his clear and concise teaching style and is especially known for his focussed revision teaching on the CTA corporate specialist route. Chris is also the co-founder (along with Dean Wootten) of Online Tutors Limited, the company behind the highly successful tax learning product known as “Tolley’s Tax Tutor.” Chris was instrumental in building this product and introducing versions specifically for ATT and CTA students. Chris has a tremendous passion for teaching and teaching methods and is currently responsible for the introduction of Accelerated Learning into Tolley’s study material. Chris is also a household name on the CPE training circuit and lectures for many organisations. He also presents a number of specialist in-house courses for top 20 firms of accountants. Before moving into the training world Chris was a member of the taxation department at PKF. He is also a graduate of Industrial Economics from Nottingham University. Chris is very involved with the work of The Chartered Institute of Taxation and is a member of their Council and the Membership and Information-Technology committees. |
Dean has been involved in tax training since 1994 and lectures on a wide variety of tax matters. Dean started his career as a Chartered Accountant, qualifying in 1988 and then as an Associate of the Institute of Taxation in 1991. After qualifying Dean spent a number of years in practice, including over five years at partner level. Dean continues to provide consultancy advice to practitioners on an ad hoc basis and his experiences enable him to focus his lecturing on the practical aspects of the issues presented. Together with Chris Jones, Dean was a founder director of Online Tutors Limited, a company specialising in providing CPD training via the internet. The company is responsible for the tax and accounting CPD update service at www.tolleyseminars.com, the tax learning product Tolley’s Tax Tutor and the quarterly Tolley’s VAT Update. Dean also writes numeorus practical articles in the professional press and is an author on the ICAEW Tax Faculty Taxline Tax Planning publication. |
Francesca Lagerberg is Head of the National Tax Office at Grant Thornton UK LLP, where she is a partner and runs the technical tax department which services the UK firm. She is a past-Chairman of the Tax Faculty of the ICAEW and now chairs its Technical Committee. Francesca writes about tax matters regularly for the professional and national press. She is also an experienced tax lecturer and won the 2008 Taxation Tax Lecturer of the Year Award. She is a qualified Barrister, Chartered Accountant (Fellow) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). She is on the editorial board of Taxation magazine and the Council of the CIOT. |
Gerry Hart CTA (Fellow) ATT is an experienced Chartered Tax Adviser who currently provides technical tax support to other professional advisers such as accountants and solicitors. He is also a prolific lecturer on a variety of tax subjects, with an enthusiastic style ensuring that delegates get the most out of the presentation. Over the years he has created and developed several tax practices, including The Tax Team which he formed in 1994 and sold to H & R Block in 1997; he was then Head of UK Operations for nearly five years. Gerry created the UK Tax Congress, an annual event held at Wembley Conference Centre in the 1980's. He was the 1995/96 National President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and founder chairman of the Sussex Branch. |

John is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. John specialises in tax investigation work, covering lengthy fraud investigations carried out by the Special Civil Investigations unit (formerly Special Compliance Office) and the Civil Investigation of Fraud offices, disputes with HM Revenue & Customs (or between taxpayers) and detailed self assessment enquiries into companies and individuals,. Recent clients vary from a well known sportsman to an Indian restaurant to a major financial services Plc. John is a regular contributor to the professional press, particularly on investigation practices and the expanding powers of the tax authorities and their consequences. John also gives regular lectures to other professionals on this topic. John is an active member of two bodies at the Institute of Chartered Accountants, being the Tax Investigations Practitioners’ Group and the Enquiries and Appeals Committee, which considers and advises on all aspects of HMRC investigation work. |
John Selwood is a Chartered Accountant and independent training consultant. He lectures on auditing, financial reporting, money laundering and company law for all the major training groups and many top accountancy practices. He also edits Auditing & Reporting and writes technical material for publishers. John is a volunteer member on the ICAEW’s Audit & Assurance Faculty Professional Services Committee and has written and presented the highly successful faculty roadshows for several years. Previously, he has been head of CharterGroup the accountancy network and the technical partner for a top thirty firm of accountants. |
Kevin is a Chartered Accountant who qualified with PwC, spending his last 18 months in its Corporate Tax department. In 1989 he moved into full-time professional training with BPP and has operated as a freelance tutor and training consultant since 1992. Kevin covers a broad range of tax areas, from corporate groups to trusts and offshore matters. He is a regular speaker on CPD courses for a cross-section of professional advisors, including accountants, lawyers, stockbrokers and financial advisors. As well as teaching and writing course material, he contributes towards text books and is a co-author of an annual Budget publication. |
Mark McLaughlin is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Since January 1998, Mark has been a consultant in his own tax practice, Mark McLaughlin Associates, which provides tax consultancy and support services to professional firms throughout the UK. Mark is a lecturer on tax subjects. He is also actively involved in the ‘Working Together’ initiative between HM Revenue & Customs and the tax and accountancy professions, and is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation’s Capital Gains Tax & Investment Income and Succession Taxes Sub-Committees. |

Mike Thexton MA FCA CTA qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1983 and as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 1984, and has been training accountants since that time. He presents general tax updates for practitioners and accountants in industry throughout the UK, as well as more detailed courses on CGT for stockbrokers and VAT for general practitioners/VAT specialists. He runs the ATII programme for VAT specialists for a large firm. Mike also writes on a variety of tax topics in the professional press. |
Mike Truman LLB FCA CTA (Fellow) MSFA is currently the editor of Taxation magazine which is published by LexisNexis Tolley. Prior to this appointment in 2004 he was a tax consultant and independent financial adviser. He has lectured and written on many taxation subjects since 1991 and brings a wealth of practical experience to his speaking engagements. Mike became a fellow of The Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1996 with his prize-winning thesis entitled "Residence, 150 Years of Misinterpretation." Mike's published works include the Small Business Adviser's Toolkit - Taxation, Taxbriefs Holistic Financial Planning manual, Tax partner Digest and Teach Yourself Basic Accounting. Mike has appeared on the video-based training programme for accountants The Accountancy Channel since 1994 and was an expert contributor to Meridian Television's programme Quids In. |

Paul graduated in Economics and Accounting at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He has worked in the accountancy profession, in both medium and large professional practices, in accountancy tuition at Chart Foulks Lynch and in higher education, where he was Principal Lecturer at Bristol Business School, University of the West of England. Paul joined Solomon Hare, Bristol in 1989, where he is currently Technical Director with responsibility for both technical and training matters.He is author of Spicer and Pegler's Book-keeping and Accounts and co-author of Financial Reporting for Smaller Companies. For over 11 years, Paul was General Editor of Butterworths Financial Reporting and Accounting Service. |
Paul is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Adviser with twenty five years in the profession, working for medium-sized accountancy firms where he specialised in tax issues affecting owner-managed businesses, the owners and their families, covering a very wide range of issues. He has been advising accountants for over ten years and during that time has made regular appearances on the lecturing circuit as well as writing for the professional press. |
Philip Fisher has worked in the field of employment taxation and rewards for the last 15 years. Recently, he has particularly specialised in the implementation of employee share schemes, advice to expatriate employees and the negotiation of settlements following PAYE & NIC investigations. He also has wide all-round experience in this field. Philip is also a keen writer and has had his book Employee Share Schemes published by CCH and also edited their Income Tax and NIC for the Employed publication for several years. In addition, he is regularly quoted in the press and has contributed to numerous other books and journals on taxation issues. Outside office hours, Philip moonlights as a theatre critic. He is London editor of the British Theatre Guide and London reviewer for the Western Mail amongst other titles and can be heard as a regular contributor to TheatreVOICE. |

Trained in London with Kidsons and, on qualifying, spent some time as Chief Accountant of a manufacturing company. She now has her own small practice in Gloucestershire that comprises of owner managed businesses and small companies. She lectures extensively for a range of professional bodies, accountancy firms, and commercial organisations, and has presented at sessions for HM Revenue & Customs and HM Treasury policy teams. Rebecca is well known on the lecture circuit for her refreshing, enthusiastic and entertaining presentation style as well as having a practical and down-to-earth approach to tax, and was named Best Tax Lecturer at the Taxation awards in 2007. She has recently taken on a special role for LexisNexis in advising on the design and delivery of CPD training for accountants. Rebecca writes regularly on tax for a range of publications, and is General Editor of the Tolleys Taxwise books, and Tax Editor of AccountingWEB.co.uk. and presents webinars and online training sessions exclusively for LexisNexis. |
Robert Jamieson MA FCA CTA (Fellow) was educated at Fettes and Pembroke College, Cambridge where he studied Moral Sciences, Robert joined Cooper Brothers & Co and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972. He then moved to Financial Training where he ran their specialist tax course and tax consultancy divisions. He passed the ATII examination in 1979 and received his FTII in 1984 for a thesis on family companies. After 20 years with Financial Training, Robert decided to return to full-time practice and became a partner in Adam Broke & Co in 1992. Adam Broke & Co merged with Mercer & Hole on 1 October 2001. Outside his work, Robert joined the Council of The Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1993 and became their President in May 1999. In addition, he is on the Editorial Board of the weekly magazine "Taxation". He contributed to Sweet & Maxwell's "Transactions: Group Company Structures" and Tolley's "Tax on Transactions" and he has written a Tax Digest for Accountancy Books on "Close Company Problems". He was also one of the original Series Editors for Croner's Tax Handbooks. Robert is an occasional commentator on private client tax matters for Legal Network Television. |
Steve is a Chartered Accountant with considerable practical and training experience. He has been responsible for accountancy training to a variety of organisations, including open courses; ranging from small businesses to major quoted companies. Steve had almost ten years experience as training manager in two medium size firms of Chartered Accountants before becoming a freelance trainer. As a complement to his training commitments, Steve runs a small audit and accountancy practice. The clients are generally owner managed, and Steve provides them all the routine professional services they require from an accountant. |
